ADS Tutor

The HOY Program is in need of volunteers to serve as tutors for our Academic Development Session (ADS) targeted at our 8th grade through 12th grade students. ADS tutors will tutor, assist with online KeyTrain® assignments, play educational games with youth, monitor internet use, follow up with students regarding attendance and give feedback on academic progress to HOY staff. Each tutor is requested to tutor at least one day per week for at least 3 months to build trust and report with students.

When and Where

Duration: September through 1st week in June. Only when GRPS is open.
Days: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Time: 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Location: Steepletown Neighborhood Services located at  671 Davis Avenue NW and the Hispanic Center of Western Michigan located at 1204 Grandville Avenue SW.
Supervision: Annette Aranda at the Hispanic Center location and Stacy Stout at the Steepletown location.

Qualifications:

  1. Completes a one hour orientation with the HOY Youth Advocate and Volunteer Coordinator (Annette Aranda), which includes a criminal background and reference check.
  2. Previous tutoring experience preferred. In absence of previous experience, candidates should research tutoring and learning techniques for different school subjects and individual learning styles. Trainings will be available for tutors throughout the year.
  3. Maintain outstanding attendance and punctuality, as HOY students and staff are depending on you.
  4. Maintain a high level of professionalism, including appropriate language and dress when working with HOY youth. Tutors serve as role models and should conduct themselves as such.
