Youth Mentor

One of the most long-term effective services we can provide to youth is a mentor. Mentors are so important and beneficial, not just to the mentee, but to the mentor as well!

  • Personal and professional growth through communication, time management, leadership and interpersonal skills trainings
  • Work with a diverse youth-oriented program that is fun, supportive and personally relevant
  • Derive personal satisfaction from helping someone

  • Tend to stay in school and get better grades
  • Self-esteem and confidence improves
  • More likely to abstain from drugs and alcohol

When and Where

Duration: 12 months
Days: Once a week. Anyday.
Time: 1 hour/week
Location: TBD by you, your mentee and the family of the mentee. Locations vary.
Supervision: Anette Aranda, HOY Youth Advocate and Volunteer Coordinator, maintains regular contact with the mentors. She is also available to trouble-shoot if any issues arise.  

Qualifications:

  1. Completes a one hour orientation with the HOY Youth Advocate and Volunteer Coordinator (Annette Aranda), which includes a criminal background and reference check.
  2. A valid driver’s license, a “good” driving record and auto liability insurance as Mentors often transport youth. Details will be reviewed during your orientation.
  3. Responsible, ability to maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries with mentee and the mentee’s family.
